Steinmeier not excluding new sanctions against Russia

KYIV, January 26 /Ukrinform/.German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, does not exclude the introduction of new sanctions against Russia by the EU after the attack on Mariupol.

He said this to the media in Berlin on Monday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

"It is clear that the attack against Mariupol or a broad offensive would have meant a qualitative change in the situation that would cause us to react," he said.

According to him, the goal is "to stop the military actions" in eastern Ukraine.

He reiterated that Kiev and Moscow should cooperate in the implementation of the agreement to withdraw heavy artillery from the "buffer zone".

German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert, on behalf of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, urged separatists to stop the advance on Mariupol and asked Moscow to assist in this.

"If we want to stop this spiral of escalation and give diplomacy a chance, it is very important for pro-Russian separatists to respect the ceasefire," he said.
