Monitoring of the Russian-Ukrainian border is possible only under appropriate security situation, OSCE SMM deputy chief Alexander Hug said in commentary to an Ukrinform correspondent.
"The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has a mandate to monitor the border, which is possible only if the security situation allows us to go to the border," Hug said.
According to him, representatives of the Mission are in constant contact with the Ukrainian border guards at checkpoints.
"If the situation improves, we will also try to monitor the areas between the border crossing points," Hug said.
At the same time, he stressed that the mandate of the Mission dealt with monitoring the border.
According to the OSCE mission representative, Ukraine and Russia should control their border areas themselves.
