KYIV, February 21 /Ukrinform/.UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon advises Ukraine to address the UN Security Council with its initiative on sending peacekeepers to Donbas.
The Secretary-General said this in a telephone conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, Deutsche Welle reported.
"On the possibility of a peacekeeping mission in eastern Ukraine, the Secretary-General informed the Foreign Minister that the United Nations would stand guided by any decision the Security Council would make on this issue," said a note released to the press by Mr. Ban's spokesperson this afternoon.
In his phone call with Minister Klimkin, Mr. Ban also commended the leadership of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. In addition, Mr. Ban and Mr. Klimkin agreed to continue their discussion on these matters.
As reported, decision on sending observers and peacekeepers can be accepted only by the UN Security Council.
On February 18, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine has decided to appeal to the United Nations and the European Union to send peacekeepers to Ukraine.
