U.S. mission to UN accuses Russia of escalating conflict in eastern Ukraine

U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations Samantha Power has accused the Russian Federation of support for the escalation of the conflict in eastern Ukraine and backing attacks by separatists, an Ukrinform correspondent has reported.

"The so-called 'road of life' leading out of Debaltseve has become a 'road of death,' littered with the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers," the U.S. representative said.

In addition, she stressed that Russia "is backing an all-out assault."

Power noted that Russia and the separatists it supported had refused to guarantee the safety of impartial OSCE monitors. Therefore, the scale of damages caused by serious attacks could be estimated only by evidence of civilians.

Power noted that the international community had repeatedly facilitated negotiations towards a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.

"Yet Russia's commitments have no bearing on the actions of its soldiers and the separatists they back on the ground," Samantha Power said.
