Eastern Ukraine conflict intensifies despite diplomatic push in Minsk

The meeting in the Belarusian capital of Minsk on Wednesday brought together the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany, offering a slim hope of peace after more than 10 months of deadly violence.

Fighting between Ukrainian soldiers and separatist rebels in east Ukraine raged on Wednesday even as European leaders met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a plan to end the conflict. FRANCE 24 reports from the front line.

Hostilities on the ground, however, have only intensified as Russian-backed rebels looked to consolidate gains and the Ukrainian army sent in reinforcements.

The latest fighting centred around the city of Luhansk. Government forces have retaken control of the town but were left stranded and continue to face heavy artillery fire from rebel positions.

Viewed from the front line, the chances of a de-escalation in the conflict appear to be very far away.
