The war in Donbass has undermined relations between Russia and most other countries of the world to such an extent that "the Cold War ghosts are coming out of the shadows."
Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson has said this, Radio Liberty reported.
According to Eliasson, the involvement of the United Nations to address the situation in Ukraine is not as deep as it could have been.
He also noted that the fighting in the east of Ukraine "shows the constraints faced by the UN in certain situations where we do not have combined actions by the Security Council and a clear direction."
He added that the organization can become a mediator if the parties to the conflict and the world's leading states want it.
Eliasson also said that the UN is now focused on the observation of human rights and on humanitarian assistance.ir
